SUSTAINABILITY

A word that is so overused. It means so little. And we hate it.

BUT IT IS SO IMPORTANT!

Sustainability isn’t just about CO2. It’s not just about plastics. It’s not just about saving water, or preventing litter, or reducing fuel consumption…we can go on, but the question then being; what IS sustainability?

For us here at Rocky Ridge, sustainability is an all encompassing commitment to doing the right thing.

And doing the right thing includes the environment. It includes people. And it includes you – which by extension, means making f*&^ing great beer.

DOWN TO
EARTH BEER

DOWN TO EARTH BEER is our slogan, but what does it mean?

Well, in a literal sense it means without pretence (probably why we hate greenwashing so much), it means without fluff, and it means doing what you say you’re going to do. Walking the walk, so to speak.

At Rocky Ridge Brewing Co, we don’t dabble; we dive headfirst into initiatives we believe in.

Drinking our beer isn’t just about enjoying a beverage; it’s about backing local communities, supporting our team, and nurturing a healthier planet – the only one with beer – cheers to that!

ZerØ Plastic

PLASTIC SUCKS.

Over 90% of all plastic that has ever been made IS NOT RECYCLED! Every year, 12,000,000 tonnes of plastics find their way into our oceans and waterways.

We f*&king hate plastic. It’s synthetic, man-made, contains no molecules that are found in nature, and is the devil (…can you tell we are passionate?)

We have systematically phased out plastics by converting to a combination of earth friendly products and opting for infinitely reusable products.

We’re committed to eliminating plastic from our production line by using alternatives such as Velcro keg bands, Bearhug palette wraps, cardboard 4-packs, recycled polyester fibres for our merchandise, and much more.

Just by switching to BearHugs alone, we’ve save 792kg of plastic since February 2023.

Water Saving

EVERY DROP COUNTS.

Did you know that beer is made up of at least 90% water?

The industry average for water consumption is a whopping 6 – 12 litres of water to make 1 litre of beer. At Rocky Ridge, we have minimised this to just 3.5 litres of water to make 1 litre of Rocky Ridge beer.

We achieve this with initiatives like using ozonated air to pre-rinse cans on our production line instead of water and understanding that a hose is not a broom!

We harvest all of our water from rainfall or groundwater sourced from the ‘refreshing springs of Mount Jindong’…FYI we lied – Jindong is flat as a pancake.

- Waste reduction -

here on site, we repurpose
99%
of our BREwERY WASTE

Solar

POWERED BY THE JINDONG SUN.

We are proudly one of the few off-grid breweries in Australia, and globally. We are a true off-grid brewery, devoid of any mains electrical connection. We rely solely on energy generated onsite, exclusively sourced from the sun, reducing fossil fuel depletion and CO2 emissions. And we’ve never had a power bill!

In 2023 alone, we generated 240,000 kWh of power, and our current 280kW, will provide enough power to run 87 average Aussie homes for a full year.

We average just 0.26 kWh of power usage, in comparison to the industry average of a whopping 60 kWh

- Reforestation initiative -

we've planted over
50,000
trees SINCE 2017

Clean Air

BIG GASPS WELCOMED.

Earth is the only planet with beer (that we know of!) so, we’ve pushed hard to reduce our CO2 emissions over the last 7 years. We produce 60% less CO2 per litre of beer than the global industry average, and have a goal to hit zero direct CO2 emissions by 2025 – will we hit it? Maybe, with your help…and the help of our brand spanking new CO2 reclaim unit…

This innovative system enables us to capture approximately 80% of the CO2 generated during fermentation, which we then reuse in our processes, rendering us fully self-sufficient for all our carbonation, transfer, and packaging requirements, whilst saving the need to purchase manufactured CO2. Yes, you read that correctly – our industry relies on manufactured CO2…when we are experiencing global warming! Major palm to face moment…

To date, this initiative has successfully captured 20,000 kilos of CO2, with the potential to capture over 100,000 kilos annually.
